Monetization

Monetization lets you earn from the attention your Riddles already get. You place your own ads above or below a Riddle, or show an ad between two questions, using ad code you already have: a campaign of your own, a sponsor's banner, or a tag from your ad server. Riddle only provides the slot; what is shown and who pays for it is up to you.

Use cases:

• Your own campaigns: promote your subscription, event or product above every quiz on your site.
• Sponsored Riddles: a sponsor's banner above the Riddle and a video ad before the result page.
• Programmatic advertising: load a tag from your ad server (for example your Google Ad Manager code) in a project ad slot and reuse it in every Riddle of that project.

Ad slots and the ad block: what is the difference?

There are two places where an ad can appear:

Both can use the same project ad slots, which you create once per project and reuse in any Riddle of that project.

Add ad slots to your project

Ad slots are defined per project, so every Riddle in the project can use them.

1. Go to the main menu in the top right corner and click on Your projects.
   
2. Click on EDIT next to the project you would like to work on.
   
3. Click on Ad Slots and enter the Slot, Head, Code, and Variables.
   • Slot: the name of the slot, as you will see it in the Creator when you pick it.
   • Head: code that has to be loaded once in the head, for example the library script of your ad server.
   • Code: the ad code itself, which is rendered where the ad appears.
   • Variables: key-value pairs you can reference in the code and override per Riddle, for example a placement ID.
   
   
4. Click on Add more ad slots and repeat step 3 for every slot you need. A project can hold up to 50 ad slots, so pages with many ad placements can use one slot per placement.
5. Click on SAVE.
   
6. You can now display the slot above or below your Riddle (next section) or insert it as an ad block between questions.

Display ads above/below your Riddle

1. Open your Riddle, go to the Settings section and click on Monetization: Display ads.
   
2. Enable Display ads above/below your Riddle.
   
3. Enable Show an ad below your Riddle and/or Show an ad above your Riddle.
   
4. For each slot, choose one of the two sources:
   • Enter the iframe URL of the page that contains your ad and the height (in px) of the iframe.
     OR
   • Enable Project ad and select one of your project ad slots.
5. Publish your Riddle again so the ads are shown in the embedded Riddle.

What ad code is accepted

• Project ad slot: any HTML or JavaScript ad tag. Code that needs to be loaded once (a library script) goes into Head, the tag that renders the ad goes into Code. Use Variables for values that differ per Riddle, such as a placement or campaign ID, and override them when you pick the slot in a Riddle.
• iframe URL: a URL to a page you host that renders the ad, plus a fixed height in pixels. An iframe does not resize automatically, so set the height to the size of the ad.

A slot shows either a project ad slot or an iframe, not both.

Troubleshooting

• The ad slot is not offered in the Riddle. Ad slots belong to a project. Make sure the Riddle is in the project where you created the slot, or transfer it.
• You cannot edit the ad slots. Editing project ads requires the Update project ads permission, see Your user roles.
• The ad does not appear in the embedded Riddle. Publish the Riddle again after changing the monetization settings.
• The iframe ad is cut off. Increase the height (in px) of the slot; an iframe is not resized automatically.
• A change to a slot affects several Riddles. That is expected: a project ad slot is shared by every Riddle in the project that uses it. Create a second slot for a different ad.
• You cannot add another slot. A project holds up to 50 ad slots. Reuse a slot with different Variables per Riddle instead of creating a new one for every placement ID.
